The Arizona State city of Goodyear, with a population in excess of 65,000, is located in Maricopa County and is famous for its wide expanse of cotton fields used in the production of tyres by world famous Goodyear. It gained fame for a different reason in 1965 when the Phoenix Trotting Park held its inaugural meeting on 11th January 1965 for harness racing, welcoming a crowd approaching 12,500. The 5 furlong oval dirt track offered excellent facilities, including a grandstand with the capacity to hold 15,000, seating 3600. Despite the euphoria at the opening, the enthusiasm of the locals was short-lived, due in part to the track not having a large catchment area; Goodyear being some distance from Phoenix. Racing came to an end on 19th March 1966, although there is still evidence of the site of the former racecourse.
